The Washington, DC Metropolitan Area includes the District of Columbia, and parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. The Virginia portion of the Metropolitan Area is known as Northern Virginia. In the past decade, The Northern Virginia Corridor has become known nationally as a center for technology companies. The District of Columbia is the Capital of the United State of America, and was created to keep the U.S. Capital from being beholden to any one state. A majority of Real Estate Professional Associations are located in the District of Columbia to fulfill their role as advocacy groups for the various real estate sectors that they represent. Government is the largest real estate owner in the nation, and employs real estate professionals in offices such as the GSA (General Services Administration), which oversees federal government real estate throughout the nation.
